Did not know what Vincent Price looked like (or what he was about) until now. I have heard his name much and I understand he's kind of a big deal, esp as the film industry was being founded. (There with Clark Gable, maybe? Peter Laurie?)
Can't get over how much he sounds like Maurice LaMarche who I am familiar with thanks to "Animaniacs" (1993-1997) (the Brain!), "The Critic" (1994-1995) and Futurama (1999-present). He's fantastic. I like his vocal talents. Ha! Fancy that - he was also in "Freakazoid!" (1995-1997) and "The Tick" (1994-1996). Cool! Nineties cartoons. :)

I have decided that he is Vincent Price's vocal doppelganger. Also decided that House of Wax (1953) is a really cool film and now I'll go watch the rest of it. Thanks, Hallowe'en and Turner Classic Movies!

Dude in Starbucks explains to his friend how his moms - who has never flown before - was soon flying to Bermudes and was planning on getting tanked so she wouldn't be terrified. He says he's trying to convince her NOT to get drunk cos it's just a bad idea when it comes to things like customs and security and a host of other reasons we should have our wits about us during international travel.
His friend, trying to slam the logic down, says, "Tell her donkeys kill more people than planes each year." She sounded adamant; she had obviously learned this fact recently and was proud of its obscurity.
Dude replies, "But she loves donkeys, though."

ha..
I found the last post I wrote involving New Years Resolutions and it was on the 3rd of January - a very appropriate time. The posts don't contradict each other! I didn't fall off the wagon! I'm not depressed by my failure and...I'm not perfect!

Esta muy bueno. (I have no idea.)

I think it's funny that the post titles are very similar. I think next year I will pick a day of every month on which I just take another glance at the chart in hopes that the things that need to be at the forefront of my mind will be there.

I am getting a rude headache so I think that means, "turn off the computer and the unnecessarily bright fluorescent LAME light in your room."

I like reading.

I'm looking forward to reviewing my New Year's Resolution chart at the end of 2010. It's going to be fantastic and fun.

One of the things on the list is to read one book per month. I missed March and my October "book" was 96 pages and I did it in one go. I don't want to count it but I will, if I can't finish the remaining 64 pages of the book I'm in right now before Sunday. I think I'll get it done before Sunday. I enjoy the book muchly; I just can't seem to read it for very long periods at a time since it's just so new-information-ish.

I don't know if it's a good thing or not that I can't easily recall most of the things on the chart to mind. I don't know if next year I would make a smaller version (it's on bristol* board) that I could stick in my wallet or whatever to have with me but I do know I would have liked to check in with it more often. I can't believe it's 3.44 pm.

One of the things I had put on the list to look forward to for 2011 I actually did in May of this year and THAT feels like a real triumph. Some of the things are a bit on-going-ish (but technically I don't think goals can be perpetual..). It's hard to think of things I want to resolve to change! Like, right now, sitting and typing it's hard to think of what my values are and where I'm headed. It's still interesting to me to think about in this nebulous way. I like that it's still October and I've got time to figure some stuff out.

(cannot beLIEVE I pumped this post out in under six minutes.)

*does this have anything to do with the city? I want it to. I like Bristol. (Yes, I know I could just ask Wikipedia.)

triet XVII

(1) I really want to write right now but I don't have anything [_____] to say. (And I possibly "should" be doing something else.)

(2) I watched part of Letterman two nights ago and his guest was Charles Barkley. Charles Barkley is very funny. I couldn't keep up with him..I couldn't even quote him. He is very funny and naturally funny.

(3) At present I have 190 new emails in my Inbox, 17 saved drafts and 1737 emails in my Inbox in total. This is gross. (Yes, I used folders.) I ...do believe I can conquer this and I do NOT believe there is any excuse for always being behind with email. I don't ever want to think this is understandable, that I might, well, give up. Or feel entitled to laziness!

(3b) I love punctuation.

Who is this scrumptious-looking man who's cleaning up on Jeopardy!?How you gonna have looks and brains? I don't understand.
His name is Jesse and he looks like a young Dean Cain if Dean Dain were an NFL linebacker. Yowza.

Other things I don't understand:
-why people start smoking cigarettes, and
-why no one told me my ear was bleeding but instead just looked at me funny. (I wonder if they thought it was a Hallowe'en-related prank.)

Last thing...a text exchange I found very amusing this evening:
My friend sent me two medium-length texts in a row that were answering two of my questions. I knew she was about to hit the gym (and that there really wasn't much to say in response) so I sent a simple "Dbl rgr" to confirm that the message was received and understood. Just a few weeks ago I had used "Rgr" with her in a similar situation but she didn't recognize the abbreviation which made it seem even lamer because taking the time to explain it means it's not achieving the inherent goal of an abbreviation! I learned it from another friend who is the biggest nerd of life and the sheer entertainment factor of this fact/origin makes me want to use it to mock nerdiness in general.
The shortening of a five-letter word to three letters, to me, is just off-the-charts lame. I was trying to mock the second term, "rgr", with the first, "dbl", for "double". Who even says "Roger" anyways, cept for those in the military or on CB radios, etc?? Ha. All very amusing to me.
She writes back to confirm: "Double roger?"
And I, enjoying that her clarification increases the geek factor, reply, "Haha when in doubt, continue to assume I'm a nerd."
SHE replies, "D & d," and I almost keel over in the grocery store. I couldn't believe it....

She meant "done and done" but my gut reading was "Dungeons and Dragons". And then the two overlapped on one another...too much. I asked if it was a masterful play on words and she said she supposed it could be. I'm choosing instead to presume that she intended it as a very cunning double entendre that mocked me and mocked Internet lingo and mocked gamers and mocked the conversation. JUST fantastic. hahahah

no Nintendo game

just watched the video for "Love the Way You Lie" (EMINEM ft. Rihanna) for the first time and I feel like I'm reeling a bit.
don't know if I've ever had such an iceberg experience of a song & video before. I've heard the track maybe a dozen times (and I like it; it gets stuck in my head which is mostly why I decided to look for the vid just now) and I thought I had a very good handle on what the song was in a way I'm not even sure I can put into words. but that was just 10% of it; just the bit above the surface.

I'm just thoroughly amazed and shocked and _________.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that it goes DEEPER than I realized. the meaning is deeper and the pain is more jagged.

I thought I got the chorus but then when I saw Rihanna singing and saw her wince on the word "hurts" I whoa-ed and stepped back thinking, I didn't know she meant it THAT way.

(just watched it again.) this whole thing is boggling my mind. no wonder people love the song and this YouTube vid has 171 million views. it's so REAL.

Gloria Estefan was RIGHT.

Sometimes when I'm in public (generally if I'm seated and somewhat relaxed) I will nod or tap or [something] to the music if it's a particularly move-to-able song. Reggae tends to get me every time, esp Bob Marley. But also guys like funk, soul, jazz, blues, and John Legend (he can stand for R & B).

Yesterday I was seated in a local coffee shop during my DAWG and in my peripheral vision I saw that the person next to me was bobbing and toe-tapping to the music. I don't remember the song but it was NOT one that had gotten to me.

I took very diligent note that this pseudo-dancing is not as imperceptible as I think and that it is incredibly lame looking. This guy DID have a white knitted turtleneck, jerky movements and a paler complexion than I but...I have to assume we're the same.

I made a serious vow to never do this in public again. Full-on dancing is different and pseudo-dancing with people I know around is also different.

Then, of course, a handful of songs later, on comes Stevie Wonder. He's singing "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" (1970) and before I'm aware, my leg is twitching and my head is bobbing. I have a shocked moment, amazed that my subconscious would betray me so. And when those five seconds are over I notice my leg is twitching again.

I try to go back to my writing, thinking that distracting my brain will help (I was writing about something important) but I also put up a little courtesy plaque in the breakroom in my head: "NO DANCING UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES". Basically I was telling myself to ignore the music. What a horrible thing to have to say to a person!

While I'm thinking about how I need to strictly control myself, I almost begin humming part of the melody. Then I notice my right hand is playing the melody on my air-piano. (For the record, I actually did write all these things down to be sure I wouldn't exaggerate later.)

I checked it and went back to writing (after holding a brief staff meeting about respecting company rules) and then my leg twitched again. Stop. The melody was back in my hands. Stop. My neck started bobbing. Stop. Leg twitch. Stop. Fingers tapping on my notebook.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?????
Is the song really THAT good? Is the beat really THAT fat? Are the memories tied up in it really THAT endearing? Sheesh.

Just when I thought I had really locked it down, after the above outburst (like a "get your head back in the game" admonishment), my EYEBROW reflected a pulling of a few notes in a way that only Stevie Wonder can do. Eyebrow? Really?

Sigh. After almost laughing at the brow I started wondering if it was hopeless. But even if this first attempt at stillness failed, I still need to make the effort until I have it locked down. Now: leg & eyebrow (stupid melody).

And finally, shamefully, I don't stop my attempt to hum in time and yes, I've silenced all doubt for any observer: I'm responding to the song. Sigh. And then a few bars later it's over. I was so close!

The next song is Stevie as well (probably "Superstition" [1972] or "I Wish"[1977]) and I give up quickly, deciding not to think about moving or humming because you can't run a marathon on your first day of training. I know that's an exaggeration but..it's the choice I made.

unbelievable

I'm watching "The Whole Truth" right now and oh boy. I think that this is my first confirmation that early 90s fashion is back. Oh, wow. Finally the fashion of a time I well remember is returning. Ahhhh of course it would come eventually.
The colors, the height of trousers, the kind of ties. Eeesh. I'm actually kinda looking forward to it.

IKEA,

Thank you for being the first real-people singing I've seen on TV in a long time that was not AutoTune-d but also good! Wow...I don't even know what to say. Ah. I love realness. I LOVE realness.

I love resourcefulness and I love quiet poverty.

I don't know if the term "quiet poverty" existed before I just typed it but I'm going to go with it. In my mind's eye the concept is small or crouched down...quiet or drawn in. I'm not sure how to describe it.

But I do know that when I went downstairs just now to make some hot chocolate I was falling over myself in delight as I remembered how I had acquired the powdered cocoa I was using. My dad was clearing out his kitchen in a move and offered me many non-perishables. I took several things and probably have used them all by now (he moved in June) but more than half of the canister of Fry's Premium Cocoa (Makers of Quality Cocoa since 1728!) remains.
A year or two ago when my grandmother offered me a hot bev and I requested hot chocolate, she said she was out of the instant powdered stuff but told me I could indeed make it with cocoa powder. Cocoa powder, granulated sugar, hot water and a smidge of milk- bada bing, you're off to the races. I like it so much better now because I can control the sweetness and I do actually enjoy the some of the bitterness of the raw cocoa.
Last weekend my mum bought soy milk to use in the Thanksgiving meal (and also to have for me while I stayed over that weekend). On Monday evening when I was leaving she asked if I wanted to take the remainder (about half a medium-sized carton) with me. Normally I'd say no because the effort required to not spill soymilk while riding two trains and a bus is not quite worth $4 of liquid. However! I had JUST run out of smilk when I left home on Saturday and was actually lamenting that I'd need to fork over the cash to replenish. I liked the timing. I liked that this cost could be delayed for what is now seven days.

And now I'm drinking the combination of all three of these memories/experiences. It's wonderful. It makes me so happy. Something someone else didn't want, I received for free and place a high(er) value on it. It's a great system.

Also quiet poverty: using 8000 Shoppers Optimum points to get for free a few groceries and the hair mousse that no one would be my friend if I didn't have. It's like someone just GAVE me ten dollars for good things.

I don't mean to put myself under the label of "poverty" and pretend I live in India, homeless and without clean water. I don't mean that. I just mean I often delight in what can be found when we do without or make different choices. I guess it's...the adage: Necessity is the mother of invention. Something like that. It's cool.
That's all, really.

something to blog about?

There should be much to say.

Maybe I will make a disjunct list. Maybe I will look up the word "disjunct". (Can you really start a sentence with the word "maybe"? I guess.... "It may be that..." yep.)

ha! didn't know all of these:
1. disjoined; separated.
2. Music. progressing melodically by intervals larger than a second.
3. Entomology. having the head, thorax and abdomen separated by deep constrictions; disjoined; disjointed.

Firefox insisted it wasn't a word. ..Firefox was dead wrong.
It doesn't quite mean what I wanted it to, though, so maybe Firefox was just looking out for me.

in any event,
-I need to learn a new kind of grieving and soon
-I am supposed to be working on a ministry review right now but it's driving me mad...so I'm here
-I think my keyboard is in worse shape than I realized..my right shift key is the only one at present that doesn't work but..why can't it just be a matter of time til the others go? c'est pas un big deal
-I feel like I have had good face-time with many people this week..but actually not enough time with any one of them
-just a little while ago I gained a big appreciation for men who are sole breadwinners (it's not the case in every family and that's fine. I was just thinking about a family I know with four kids and a mom who never "had to" work...gosh. I don't appreciate men enough, really. I want to re-hear all the things I've been told about what the stress of leading and providing for a household does to a man. I am armed with good dose of empathy..or something. I-get-it-ness, is kinda the word that comes to mind. it's not that I see his struggles as bigger than the woman's but that they are unique--and that means something to me.)
-I don't know anything
-I'm tired
-I should be working
-I sound like I'm complaining right now..maybe I am. I think this is maybe the equivalent of taking a quick jog around the block to get your blood flowing...I'm trying to write and output to make my brain more able to think about and produce these ministry reviews.

-I wish I could use names on this blog so I could more easily rave about people I like..and people I was hanging out with recently. hahaha I should assign code names! hahahah...hmm this is not the worst idea I've ever had.
-I've been half-toying with the idea of a not-series (but maybe actually a series) on Transparency. I wondered what it might be like if I wrote a couple posts with no filter (save for names)..with none of the normal ambiguity I choose to blog with. I thought for just a few...I could write exactly what I'm thinking or what I'm talking about, instead of talking more about the theoretical or whatever else I talk about. Ah. It could be Pandora's Box up in here; I'm not sure. This is the Interweb, after all.

something to think about.
ministry review.

Just got in from being with sister and long-lost cousin for five hours and grandfather for an hour and a half and (can't say I expected it but) I'm buzzed.

Hmmmmm. What to say? Granted, these are easier family peeps to hang out with but I really didn't expect it would be so fun and so chill.

For the final two hours we were all singing together. There's a piano in one of the rec rooms in my grandfather's apartment building so when there we tried to find songs we all knew and could belt but it's difficult with a fifty-year age gap. We did OK.
Can't tell you how refreshing it is to sing with people who can sing (!). I am sorry if that alienates or offends anyone who reads this. All I'm saying is it's refreshing.

At the resto for lunch I heard Cousin singing half a line to the song being played quietly to herself and I wanted to exclaim, "YES! It is so good to hear that!" I feel like I've been drowning in pitchlessness for a while now. Not for forever but just the last couple days and particularly this morning.
It was gorgeous. The three of us (cuz, sis and I) talked about how our paternal genes carry the musical aptitude and it is JUST SO NICE to be able to sing with people who can sing and can stay in key and can hear. I love it. I don't expect it everywhere so I don't walk around disappointed for most of my life/day. This was a pleasant gorgeous surprize.

When cuz and sis went out for a butt before sis & I took off we also sang just us three..and there was Boyz II Men, Mariah Carey, a little BSB..it was great. Finger-snapping, half dance moves, parts, saxophone or strings solos in the bridge. Just gorgeous. We, you see, grew up in essentially the same generation so 90s music be close to nos coeurs. Twas....fantastigreat. So nice to feel like I fit in. So often in other cases I'm holding back but with them I was par for the course. VERY nice. (77)

There should be more to say but..I'm going to go git my dinner on.

triet XVI

(1) What I like: the sixteen-year-old daughter seems to have moved back in with her mum (which she needs). I also realized more today than ever how talented and what a KNACK she has for visual art/design, etc. She's going to be an impressive young woman in a few years. (I'm boggled by the fact that she's taking a sewing class. In 2010? Really? Love it.)

(2) What I just realized: the reason I have such a hard time with resumes and cover letters is that when I write things about myself I feel like I'm lying or exaggerating because I read the invisible word "always" or "perfectly" in front of all the things I claim to be or be capable of. YEP. I suppose reasonable people (the potential employers) don't expect their employees or potential employees to be perfect....do they? Honestly, I think they do expect perfection but there it is.

(3) Gmail feature I only noticed yesterday: when I clicked Send on an email in which I had edited a friend's cover letter, a dialogue box asked me if I meant to attach something because the body of the email contained the words "I have attached" but there were no attachments.

!!

Wow! I mean - it's impressive and it's useful especially when you're doing something as important as sending your cover letter and resume to a potential employer. But on the other hand it's a little creepy that these computers are reading my emails. They must know all my secrets. Just kidding. I've heard there's also a feature that asks you if you REALLY want to send if you're firing off emails between like 2 and 6am or something like that. Apparently you can set the hours yourself. (Is it called "Goggle" or something?) Coolz.

jonesing for affirmation

I'm not really ashamed to say I almost sent a text-message just now that read, "I like you. Do you like me?"

It's a ridiculous thing to do for so many reasons.
1) it's already a set-up to ask someone point-blank (same as asking whether someone likes your haircut). it's hard to say no to if you have ANY sensitivity whatsoever or idea of social propriety.
2) starting with "I like you," puts them in an even tighter spot (like saying, "I love you," and letting that silence hang until it's filled with the phrase repeated and a "too" tacked on) because it's almost like, "I did YOU a favor..can't you have the decency to return it??"
3) if you have to ask (so bluntly) there are either big problems in the relationship/friendship that that is actually a question OR you are simply fishing. if the other person thinks it's the latter, then they can faff it off but if they're not 100% sure you're fishing they will likely decide to err on the side of caution and treat the question as sincere. (it's not pleasant to be in that position of wanting to pick what seems obvious but having to pick the other because the risk of being wrong is too high.)
4) if the recipient has had to answer this question before (directly or indirectly) then it will likely be irritating for them to discover that you either think they're lying or you don't listen. or perhaps even that you're using them.
5) it sounds juvenile (maybe because it IS juvenile!).

I still want to ask it but I won't. I would only say it if someone KNEW I was joking..and the point would be to give me an excuse to say I like them. Ha. It's like saying what you mean but not quite...?
